About Tanya Bird
Tanya is an up-and-coming and talented artist, the granddaughter of Ada Bird Petyarre, and the daughter of Utopian artists Paddy and Eileen Bird. Tanya was raised in an artistic family, with Ada's sisters Gloria, Kathleen, Jeannie, and Rosemary being well-known aboriginal artists. Tanya's grandmother was a traditional elderly woman who was part of the women Utopian artists who began painting on batik and subsequently progressed to acrylic painting. Her grandmother taught young women about their predecessors' customs, hoping that future generations would carry on the tradition.
Design Inspiration
Tanya started painting while she was a youngster, and she was extremely close to Ada, who had a big influence on her. Tanya began painting in monotone colours in 2010 to depict her own authentic style. Featuring in Tanya’s designs is the bush plum which is a shrub that grows in the Central Desert. It produces little white blooms and small purple to blackberries that are edible when fully mature but toxic if eaten before they are fully ripe. The women of Utopia harvest the fruit and perform Ceremonies to ensure that the fruit germinates and produces plenty of fruit for the following season.
