About Joy Pitjara (Petyarre) Joy is from Alhalkere Country in Central Australia's Utopia region, where she was born in 1965. Joy was one of the first Utopian women to work with Batik, and her work is featured in Robert Holmes 'Utopia – A Picture Story Court Collection. Joy transitioned from batik to canvas painting in 1999. Her stories about the Pencil Yam and women's ceremonial Dreaming stories have made her famous. Design inspiration Joy’s designs are influenced by the history of the Utopian Artists which includes designs based on the pencil yam, one of the most frequent bush foods. It is a thin and twining shrub with yellow pea blooms that bloom all year long. The pencil yam comes in two varieties, each of which is native to a different part of the world. You will note that Joy’s designs utilise intricate dot painting style which is very time-consuming but has an outstanding result.
