About Walala Tjpaltjarri

Tjapaltjarri was born in the late 1960s or early 1970s. He was born in Malua near Lake Mackay. He grew up in the desert in a traditional nomadic lifestyle. His family had no exposure to modern European and Australian society. Walala's family are well-known as the last Aboriginal people living a traditional nomadic life in Australia.

Walala started painting in December 1987, a few years after settling in Kiwirrkurra. He was introduced to painting by his cousin Warlimpirrnga. Walala joined the Papunya Tula artists and Thomas and Warlimpirnga and eventually achieved international fame as his Tjapaltjarri brothers.

Tjapaltjarri's early work was in the flowing "dot" style of painting typical of the Papunya Tula artists in the Northern Territory. His style became different during the late 1990s, and began to paint rigid rectangles, replacing dotted lines with thick, solid lines.

In 1997, Walala has his first exhibition for the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in the Northern Territory.  His work has featured in my famous Aboriginal Artist collections in Australia, Europe and the United States. Tjapaltjarri paints the most out of the three Tjapaltjarri brothers and when painting regularly, he earns up to AU$2000 a day.
