About Jeannie Petyarre (Pitjara)

One of Central Art's most popular artists, Jeannie Petyarre (Pitjara) was born in 1951 in the small Aboriginal outstation of Boundary Bore in the Utopia region of Central Australia. She comes from a legendary family of famous Aboriginal artists.  She is the niece of the great Emily Kame Kngwarreye and her sister with similar art designs is Rosemary Petyarre (Pitjara).

Jeannie not only is blessed with a talented family to support her artistic development, but she is also a native of a beautiful country to find inspiration from when creating her artworks.

Like many of the women from Utopia, Jeannie became acquainted with modern art through the community projects in Utopia that occurred in the late 1970s and 80s.  Through their first community project, "Utopia: A Picture Story," Utopia emerged as an artistic community and it was at this time where the women learned about silk batiks.

Jeannie’s art has featured in well-known art exhibitions across Asia, the USA, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia.  Her art is also featured in the National Gallery of Australia.

Design Inspiration

Passed down from her father‚Äôs side, the story of ‚ÄúYam Dreaming‚ÄĚ underpins many of Jeannie‚Äôs artworks.¬† In the paintings, you will see her highlight various stages of the plants' growth and parts including the seed, leaf, and flower.¬† The yam plant is vital medicine for Aboriginal People and hence, many of Jeannie‚Äôs artworks are titled, ‚ÄúBush Medicine Leaves‚ÄĚ.
